Grandma

Today, memories of my childhood, especially that of my grandmother, have been brought to my mind. It began in the morning. With out breakfast, we were served smiling cow cheese which we could eat with our bread. I haven’t seen that cheese in a long time and it reminded me of my grandmother. When I was younger, I would go to Jamaica with any family member that happened to be going down and would stay with my grandmother. I was her favorite grandchild as I was the only one born outside of Jamaica and the youngest. I have fond memories of her, one of my fondest is that whenever she would come back from the market, she would get me Laughing Cow cheese, which I referred to as “happy cow cheese” because of the sticker on the individual cheese piece. Additionally with breakfast, we have had a choice in hot beverage, including Milo. Milo is similar to Hot Chocolate but has a distinct taste. I grew up on Milo, mostly while in Jamaica but my mom would pick some up on occasion when we went to the Caribbean store.

Lastly, today, I went to Aburi Botanical Gardens. While there I saw different types of trees and their usage. Was that I saw a butterfly. I never knew why, but I always associated butterflies with my Grandmother and see them as a sign that she is with me. I knew that we were in botanical garden so it would logically make sense for a butterfly to be there; however, seeing it brought joy to my soul. It made me glad to know that my grandmother is still here with me and somehow her spirit made it to the motherland with me, which I know she would have loved to do if she were alive.

  1. That is awesome that you were able to feel a connection to your Grandmother in Ghana. What do you think she would say about you being in Ghana right now?
